Not about <strong>Eknath Shinde<\/strong>. This is <strong>India, 2024<\/strong>, where free speech exists <strong>only if no one gets hurt.<\/strong> Spoiler alert: <strong>EVERYONE gets hurt.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kunal Kamra? Club vandalized because someone couldn\u2019t take a joke.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranveer Allahbadia? Hounded last month for comments during a show with Samay Raina.<\/strong> \ufe0f<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nagpur? Violence erupted, and now CM Fadnavis says he\u2019ll seize assets from rioters to recover costs.<\/strong> \ufe0f<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the question\u2014will that same logic apply to the people who trashed the comedy club?<\/strong> Or does &#8220;justice&#8221; only work selectively? <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Criticism in India = Political Tug-of-War <\/strong><strong>\u2696\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Free speech? <strong>Lol, nice joke.<\/strong> Here\u2019s how it really works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If someone from <strong>your side<\/strong> says something offensive, it\u2019s <strong>&#8220;bold&#8221; and &#8220;fearless.&#8221;<\/strong> <\/li>\n<li>If someone from the <strong>other side<\/strong> says it, it\u2019s <strong>&#8220;offensive&#8221; and &#8220;anti-national.&#8221;<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t believe in free speech.<\/strong> We believe in <strong>selective outrage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Comedy\u2019s Rise &amp; Fall in India <\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>\ufe0f<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stand-up comedy in India was booming. From <strong>underground clubs<\/strong> to <strong>Netflix specials<\/strong>. From <strong>ex-girlfriend jokes<\/strong> to <strong>political satire<\/strong>. But now? <strong>It\u2019s all going down the drain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comedians are <strong>self-censoring<\/strong> before they even pick up the mic.<\/li>\n<li>Venues are <strong>getting attacked.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Artists are <strong>apologizing<\/strong> for jokes made years ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How long before stand-up comedy <strong>just dies<\/strong> in India? <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hurt? Sue. Don\u2019t Vandalize. <\/strong><strong>\u2696\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Feeling offended is <strong>not a crime.<\/strong> Breaking things <strong>is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CM <strong>Devendra Fadnavis<\/strong> has rightly vowed to recover damages from <strong>rioters in Nagpur<\/strong>.  Great. Now let\u2019s apply the <strong>same rule<\/strong> to the goons who wrecked the comedy club. <strong>Auction their property. Make them pay.<\/strong> Fair, right?<\/p>\n<p>Or do we only punish rioters based on <strong>who they offended?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Nation That Laughs Together, Stays Together <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We are now a country where <strong>jokes are dangerous,<\/strong> but <strong>violence is normal.<\/strong> Where <strong>words get you canceled, but vandalism gets a high five.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about <strong>left, right, or center.<\/strong> Every party, every fandom, <strong>does this.<\/strong> We\u2019ve <strong>canceled<\/strong> comedians, cricketers, actors\u2014<strong>who\u2019s next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time we <strong>grow up.<\/strong> Stand-up comedy should make us <strong>laugh, think, and question.<\/strong> Not <strong>run for cover.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Or hey, let\u2019s just <strong>ban comedy altogether<\/strong> and turn India into the <strong>World\u2019s Largest No-Fun Zone.<\/strong> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A stand-up comedy club in Mumbai gets vandalized because Kunal Kamra cracked jokes about Eknath Shinde.
