Some words sound harmless. They sneak into conversations, make you feel like you\u2019re doing something, and give others the illusion that you\u2019re committed. But peel the mask off, and you\u2019ll see two of the most destructive words in the English language – <\/span>hoping<\/b> and <\/span>trying<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoping is just outsourcing responsibility to the universe. It\u2019s the linguistic equivalent of sitting on the couch while wishing the house would clean itself. When someone says, \u201cI hope it works out,\u201d what they really mean is: \u201cI\u2019ve decided not to do anything about it and will now wait for someone else – or blind luck – to save me.\u201d Hope belongs in lotteries and prayer rooms, not in boardrooms, relationships, or any arena where outcomes actually matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trying is even more insidious because it masquerades as effort. But it\u2019s really the soft escape hatch for people who don\u2019t want to admit they\u2019re not invested. You \u201ctry\u201d the new hobby, you \u201ctry\u201d the new caf\u00e9, you \u201ctry\u201d yoga. Harmless, low-stakes, no skin in the game. But when it comes to the big stuff – building a business, raising a child, fighting an addiction, leading a team – there\u2019s no \u201ctrying.\u201d You either do it or you don\u2019t. Anything less is self-deception dressed as activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the brutal truth:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If you\u2019re hoping, you\u2019re waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If you\u2019re trying, you don\u2019t care enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

So the next time these words slip out of your mouth, stop and ask yourself: Am I avoiding action? Am I pretending to care about something I actually don\u2019t? Because when it comes to the things that truly matter, there is no room for hope or trying. There is only doing.<\/span><\/p>\n
