Today I&#8217;m taking off the citizen hat and putting on the one I&#8217;ve actually worn for fifteen years &#8211; the guy who&#8217;s been inside these shenanigans, on the strategy side of protests, campaigns and the theatre we call public life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So read this as CJP protest political analysis &#8211; a cold reading of the board, not a cheer for anyone. Both sides are about to hate it. Good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s the question every magician answers on night one: how do you make an elephant disappear? You don&#8217;t. Elephants don&#8217;t vanish. You simply make the crowd look somewhere else for the half-second the trick needs. It&#8217;s called misdirection, and it is, in my read, exactly what the government just pulled on the CJP protest in Delhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE ELEPHANT THEY COULDN&#8217;T CAGE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewind. A satirical movement born out of a Chief Justice calling jobless youth &#8220;cockroaches,&#8221; a US-returned strategist named Dipke, and a Jantar Mantar sit-in that refused to die. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapilgupta.in\/blog\/cockroach-janta-party-protest-turnout-analysis\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cockroach Janta Party protest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was no longer just satire. It had become a student movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonam Wangchuk fasting twenty days down to losing 9.1 kilos. On July 20, by some counts a lakh of people trying to reach Parliament &#8211; met with tear gas, lathis, 65-plus medico-legal cases on the civilian side, 118 injured cops on the other, and barricades protesters swear were electrified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is not a crowd you disperse. That is an elephant that walked into the room and sat down. The state could not cage it, could not shame it, could not wait it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it did the only thing a good strategist does with an animal too big to move: it changed what you&#8217;re looking at.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>ENTER THE FARMERS &#8211; RIGHT ON CUE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then, with a timing so immaculate it should embarrass everyone involved, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha glides in with &#8220;wholehearted solidarity,&#8221; a delegation to Jantar Mantar, and the familiar rumble of Singhu warming up again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solidarity. Sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me say the quiet part at full volume: I do not believe this was spontaneous, and I don&#8217;t think you should either. The single most protest-ready bloc in the country &#8211; the one force with a standing grievance, a war chest, and battle-drilled muscle memory from 2020-21 &#8211; does not just happen to mobilise in the exact week a leaderless student uprising becomes ungovernable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s not solidarity. That&#8217;s a cavalry call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you have to ask who benefits when it lands &#8211; because it isn&#8217;t the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch what the farmers\u2019 support for the CJP protest actually does to the frame. A clean, damning, one-sentence scandal &#8211; the state gassed kids over a rigged exam &#8211; gets swallowed whole by a sprawling, decade-old, everything-and-nothing morcha the establishment already knows how to fight in its sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapilgupta.in\/blog\/neet-paper-leak-telegram-ban\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEET paper leak protest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vanishes. Dharmendra Pradhan vanishes. The 65 bleeding teenagers vanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their place: &#8220;farmers vs government, round two,&#8221; a rerun nobody&#8217;s blood boils over anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The farmers have real grievances, yes &#8211; which is precisely what makes them the perfect cover story. You don&#8217;t smuggle an elephant offstage with a curtain. You smuggle it out behind a bigger, louder, more familiar elephant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wasn&#8217;t chaos breaking loose. It was a controlled burn, lit on purpose, dosed to the milligram &#8211; enough smoke to lose the crowd&#8217;s eyeline, never enough to catch the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter David Copperfield, stage right, in a Nehru jacket, snapping his fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE SCRAMBLE FOR RELEVANCE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the second a student protest in India gets big, it stops being about the cause and becomes a market. Everyone shows up to buy relevance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s the board as I actually read it &#8211; and yes, this is the part that&#8217;ll make blood boil on every side:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CONGRESS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;This thing&#8217;s gaining steam &#8211; we wrote it off and now it&#8217;s huge. How do we get a piece? Can&#8217;t go to Jantar Mantar, CJP won&#8217;t let us plant a flag there. Fine &#8211; we&#8217;ll sit outside the PM&#8217;s house instead. Best case they beat us. Second best, they arrest us.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so, obligingly, Rahul is lifted to Chhatrasal Stadium, Priyanka to Mandir Marg, Kharge and Akhilesh detained, two CMs in tow. Mission accomplished: the story is now partly about them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CJP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The dog that chased the car for two months has finally caught it. Jaws around the bumper, tail wagging, eyes wide &#8211; and absolutely no idea what a dog does with a car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CJP student movement&#8217;s superpower was that it belonged to no party. Its curse is the same thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE STUDENTS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;We showed up. There was no leadership and no plan. We got gassed, we got beaten, we filled the hospital forms &#8211; and now the very people who couldn&#8217;t organise a march are texting us to show up again, for\u2026 what, exactly?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That silence is the most honest sound in this whole affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>AMIT SHAH:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Enter the magician. You couldn&#8217;t beat the students into silence and you couldn&#8217;t martyr Wangchuk without a bill. So you don&#8217;t fight the elephant. You call the farmers &#8211; they always have a reason &#8211; and you let the frame get so crowded nobody can find the original question anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you see the NEET scandal. Now you don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>MY READ<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this thing have legs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genuinely, yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is real fury, real numbers, real moral weight &#8211; the raw material of something that could actually become a movement, even a reckoning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a revolution needs the scales to align, and they don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one side you have strategists who think in dosage, political misdirection and news cycles. On the other you have a leaderless student body, a satirical party that never wanted to govern, and an opposition whose grand plan was to get arrested photogenically outside a bungalow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anger is with the protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stagecraft is with the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That gap is the whole story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So watch carefully over the next week. When the coverage quietly slides from &#8220;students beaten over a rigged exam&#8221; to &#8220;farmers vs government, round two,&#8221; don&#8217;t mistake it for the movement growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s the elephant leaving the stage while you applaud the smoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; KG<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>FAQs<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1.
