Tough Economic Lesson For Country’s Engineering Academicians

Engineering is the practice of making things better, more efficient and getting more out of the resources.

With the opening up of the economy nearly 2 decades back and the global workforce movement, India saw plethora of opportunities open up. The easiest thing to do was to open up a new engineering college, and hence we have more engineering colleges than McDonald’s, Dominos, PizzaHut and a few more fast food chains put together.

Over the last 2-3 years, as the industry has tightened and Indian IT industry is seeing perhaps its first slump in 2 decades, most smart colleges have doubled up (and more) their marketing spending and have been able to ensure sanity.

Till we saw 2017. The engineering colleges and the intake in them is struggling. By some estimates, the form sales have taken a hit by as much as 25% to 30%. And this in an industry where institutes have increased seats almost every year. The more expensive ones, the ones which have lower quality infrastructure and can’t justify their stance are the worst hit, but everyone is going through the pain.Continue Reading

The (in)Famous Indian Standard Time

We all know it, we all hate it and yet, we all do it!

Well, I am talking about the (in)famous Indian Standard Time!

Have you ever wondered the genesis of Indian Standard time? Why are we always beginning meetings and things late?

Let’s start from the beginning!

We do take the usual 9 months to come out. We usually start our pre-school at 3 and our regular schooling at 5. It is not like we have a higher life expectancy than other countries. Yet, somewhere in-between, we have the Indian Standard Time.

In our country, schools start on time. Kids are never late in getting to school. Somewhere from where we get out of school to where we get to adult life, we start getting late for everything.

I have seen people blame colleges for it, saying how the entire concept of college is chilled, relaxed and okay with students being late. But, in my opinion, that’s not it. College classes do start in time. And the schedules do get managed.

In my view, it’s a social and cultural issue. And the thing about the cultural and social issue is that it is made by us. WE THE PEOPLE! We are not the ones who suffer from IST, we are the ones that proliferate it. It’s what most of us have gotten as inheritance, maybe even genetically transmitted.Continue Reading

HR is HR No More!

Perhaps the biggest impact of the digital world is the job of the HR. From being a role where the profile was simply to hire those that fitted well with the company, offering bananas for every good performance and firing those that didn’t fit well, HR has become what we in OMLogic call as ‘Office […]

Makemytrip + Ibibo: A marriage of convenience??

I don’t know whether to start this blog with ‘Another one bites the bullet’ or ‘Another one takes a fall’, but that’s exactly my sentiment.   We are seeing a dangerous trend in the Indian e-commerce industry where new deals are being done, not from a position of power, rather because they have run out […]

If only life is a journey

Isn’t it an irony! We spend our lifetime trying to improve our life. But none of us have any means of defining what is an improved life. Really think of it!! We like to think of an improved life as the presence of this or the absence of that. We look at an improved life […]

Independence – Its not so great!

It is our 70th independence day. I can’t even imagine what the life or world was 70 years back. Of course, I wasn’t there. I can’t imagine what emergency was like, of course I wasn’t there. But I can’t even imagine what life was 20 years back though I was there. It was a different […]

January 4, 2016

We, as humans, are currently standing at a very important juncture. A juncture that could even change the course of if we as humans are. I am sure generations before would have gone through some important decisions in their lifespan, some of them would have turned right and some of them wrong. But none appear as important or as game-changing as this one.

Present course and speed, we are years, maybe few decades (if we are lucky), from total doom. And we need to change that. We need to change our world, our future.Continue Reading

Capital Punishment
August 29, 2015

Capital punishment- It got me thinking!

What is this fascination people have with living longer? For themselves and for others!

Being alive and enjoying every moment of it, Yes, I am all for it. That’s what I try to do always. But why longer?Continue Reading

Women Safety is NOT Women Empowerment

Reservations were necessary (absolutely necessary) for providing equitable treatment to people across the  country. But they should have been removed (atleast refined) years back. Reservations are needed, anyday, to provide equal opportunity but they can’t really assure equal treatment by mere implication.

Before we gauge further, let me tell you this blog is NOT about reservations. It is about women empowerment but the quandary remains the same. Last couple of years have been majorly about women empowerment and all the conversations about it.Continue Reading
